It is a close relative of the black oak ( " Quercus velutina " ) found in eastern and central North America.
"Quercus velutina " was previously known as yellow oak due to the yellow pigment in its inner bark, however nowadays this name is usually reserved for Chinkapin oak.
The quercitannic acid molecule is also present in quercitron, a yellow dye obtained from the bark of the Eastern black oak ( " Quercus velutina " ), a forest tree indigenous in North America.
The trees found here include ( to name a few ) Eastern hemlock ( Tsuga canadensis ), Eastern black oak ( Quercus velutina ), Red Maple ( Acer rubrum ), Sugar Maple ( Acer saccharum ), Shagbark hickory ( Carya ovata ), Tree of Heaven ( Ailanthus altissima ), Flowering dogwood ( Cornus florida ) and Tulip tree ( Liriodendron tulipifera ).
The oak savannas of the Midwestern United States form a transition zone between the arid Great Plains to the west and the moist black oak ( " Quercus velutina " ), although the chinquapin oak " ( Quercus muhlenbergii ) ", post oak ( " Quercus stellata " ), and black-jack oak ( " Quercus marilandica " ) are also common.
